Junior Rowing
Nottingham Rowing Club has an active Junior section, formed from the highly successful Nottingham Schools’ Rowing Association in the July 2006 merger. Our Juniors are coached by a group of coaches including British Rowing National Junior Coach of the Year Julie Edwards. Our activities are carried out in accordance with British Rowing Water Safety Code and Child protection guidelines and all our Coaches are British Rowing qualified and CRB certified. We currently have over 40 members ranging in age from 13 to 18. Some of our recent successes include:
- National Schools 2010: winner of boys J16 Quad scull, girls J16 Quad scull and finalist in many other events including girls J15 Eights.
- Schools Head 2010: winner JW16 8+
- GB v France match 2009 - winner of boys J16 double scull
- National Championships 2009: winner of boys J16 single scull and silver in girls’ J18 double scull
- British Indoor Rowing Championships: gold in boys junior lightweight and in girls under 11, silver in girls under 12 and bronze in boys junior open
- National Sculling Head, Henley: 2 boys quads in top 10
- Winner at Henley Royal Regatta, 2008 as part of a composite crew
In addition, we have had numerous wins at many other Head Races and Regattas both locally and nationally and several of our rowers have represented East Midlands in the GB Junior Inter-Regional Rowing Championships.
Younger rowers and Improvers usually do three sessions a week, two water (at the National Watersports Centre, Holme Pierrepont) and one gym at Trentside. Once they have a reasonable level of proficiency rowers are merged into existing squads. Older and more ambitious rowers train several times a week with Circuit Training, Running, Weights sessions etc in addition to rowing sessions.
Our Junior rowers, up to age 14, Scull (one blade in each hand), in Quads, Doubles and Singles. At 15 Juniors may begin Sweep Oar Rowing (one big blade) but will continue to scull as well.
Getting Involved
Juniors can get involved in rowing in Nottingham through a number of routes:
City Schools and Rushcliffe Schools Rowing
Participating schools compete through the winter on Concept II Indoor Rowing Machines (ERGOs) and then have the opportunity to try on-water rowing during the summer. Some will then be able to join Nottingham Rowing Club Junior Section (subject to availability of spaces).
Project Oarsome
Schools participating in Project Oarsome do Indoor Rowing (Dry Start) before progressing onto the water (Wet Start), in a similar manner to the City/Rushcliffe Schools.
World Class Start
The ARA WCS (World Class Start) scheme identifies those with physical attributes which may make them well-suited to rowing at a very high level. A group of World Class Start athletes are currently following a High Performance training Programme at Holme Pierrepont. WCS assessors visit schools to identify anyone who may be suitable. Those who don’t yet meet the WCS criteria but have athletic potential may be invited to develop their rowing with NRC Juniors.
